We currently hold two green flags the first was awarded for Litter and waste. The second flag was awarded two years later under the theme of Energy. We are currently working on our third theme:  Water.

The Transition year students make up the main body of the green schools committee, coordinated by Ms. Delaney and supported by Ms. O’ Farrell.

Drama Club

This term saw the emergence of Ardscoil Mhuire’s Drama Club.  All students were invited to join this after school activity.  Admittedly there were a few raised eyebrows.  “Would we be studying plays?”  “Would we have an audience looking at us?”  “Would we have to learn lines?”  “Has this anything to do with bloody Shakespeare?!?”  Needless to say students crept very slowly into the library on that first Tuesday.

Drama Club turned out to be nothing like what students imagined.  The emphasis is very much on fun and letting yourself go.  Various teamwork exercises had students tied up in knots (literally) while improvisation games sparked their imagination.  The mixture of physical activity and mind games combined to create much laughter and wonderful performances.

Drama Club will continue next September.  Everyone is welcome and no previous drama experience is necessary.  All that is required is an open mind and a desire to have fun.

Biology Day in UL

Earlier this year our Sixth Year Biology students had the invaluable opportunity to participate in a day-long Biology workshop in UL.  The girls had a great time, though there was a serious side to their trip too!  The girls worked hard revising and practicing the experiments that they will be required to know for their Leaving Cert exam.  We're sure that this hands-on approach will have benefitted them hugely!

Engineering Week

Engineering Week  was marked this year by Cook Medical sending two of their R&D Biomedical Engineers to visit our Science Department.  Melissa and Sarah graciously gave of their time to speak to our Third and Fifth Years about their study of biomedical engineering and to explain the reasons why engineering suited them as a career.  Their career stories and descriptions of their day to day life as researchers gave our students a rare insight to science in the work place.  Both Melissa and Sarah served as an inspiration to our students by demonstrating the opportunities, challenges, and successes for women in engineering.

Their presentation ended with an unusual challenge… to make a prosthetic lower leg!  Our girls tackled this with their characteristic competitive energy and had an enjoyable and enlightening time!

A huge thanks to Cook Medical, who, as partners to our school, have been incredibly supportive to our staff and students over the years!

Science Fest

ASM always has a strong presence at the annual Scifest event in Limerick, and this year was no different as we were represented by two Second Year students, Erin Barrett and Tara Hamilton. Scifest is a regional competition with students from schools all over Limerick City and County presenting their scientific investigations in the hope of winning one of the prestigious prizes. Erin and Tara worked extremely hard for months on their life-science project entitled, ‘Analysis of how People's Age, Religion, and Location Affects their Views on the LGBT+ Community'. The girls hard work was rewarded when they were awarded First Prize Social Science Winner in the Life Science category.

The girls’ dedication and hard work over the past few months is something to be admired and will hopefully inspire more students to participate next year. Well done girls!
