Review of 2015/2016

Training for Basketball started last September every Friday after school in Grove Island. Training allowed us to hone our skills and work on our tactics. We had some great fun and tough games throughout the year and no matter what, all the girls left the court after every outing smiling.

First Years

In the First Year competition we were drawn against our near neighbours Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh as well as Salesian College Pallaskenry.  Due to our proximity to Gaelcholáiste we both invited Pallaskenry to Corbally for a tournament to see which two schools would progress from our group. After a thrilling first game we were victorious against the Gaelcholáiste. Pallaskenry proved a bit too strong for us on the day so we finished up with a victory and a loss after our first outing. Due to ourselves and the Gaelcholáiste being level on points we had to replay two weeks later. Unfortunately on the day we were second best and as a result we didn’t progress to the semi-finals of the competition, though the girls did play well and represented ASM with pride!

Second Years

Like our First Years, our Second Years were drawn against Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh and Salesian College Pallaskenry. Beating both of these teams allowed us to progress to the Quarter Finals of the Limerick Schoolgirls’ League. We were drawn against St. Nessan’s and on the day we performed very well. The girls played with a great work rate and will to win, though missed out on a win out by the narrowest of margins.

Our Cadette team were the schools most progressive basketball team of the year. Beating Coláiste Nano Nagle, Castletroy College, and Salesian College Pallaskenry set us up for a Quarter Final against Hazelwood College. After a tough game we won by 6 points which led to a Semi Final against St John the Baptist, Hospital. After a thrilling game, which went from one end of the court to the other, we were unlucky to fall short by only 4 points to an extremely capable opposition.

Overall it was a great year for Basketball in Ardscoil Mhuire. Looking back we have some great memories and the lessons we learned in each game will stand to us next year. I would like to thank everyone for all their effort and commitment all year and look forward to seeing them next year.
