Concern Debate

The Concern Debates have been a cornerstone of debating and public-speaking in Ardscoil Mhuire for many years.  This year’s team is blessed with a unique blend of talent, enthusiasm, experience, and confidence that resulted in a series of six thrilling and entertaining debates this year. Of those before Christmas, one on the refugee crisis against Laurel Hill Coláiste, resulted in a draw, and another against Villiers on the voting age saw our girls win by unanimous decision.

Their confidence on the rise, the girls returned refreshed after the Christmas break to go on a three debate winning streak where they tackled tough topics such as the COP21, the SDGs, and population growth.  Along the way they bested Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh, Presentation Listowel, and CBS Mitchelstown, all by unanimous decision!  As a result of this incredible performance the girls placed within the top sixteen teams nationwide and won a place in the Knockout Round.  In this round CBS Kilkenny and the Robin Hood Tax proved to be a tough combination and the girls were unfortunately defeated after a heated and exciting debate.  Congratulations to Hannah Purcell, Melanie McKnight, Emma Plunkett, Hannah Brown, and Chloe Whelan on what has been a standout year of debating for a relatively new team.  Next year will certainly be interesting!
